The Talks – 2010 Olympic Podcasts

Intellectual Muscle

Intellectual Muscle was developed by Vancouver 2010 and the University of British Columbia, in collaboration with universities across Canada and The Globe and Mail.

KAM digital started production on this series in February of 2009 as the Intellectual Muscle series Technical Director. First preparing a technical standards document, with recordings coming in from across Canada there had to be a minimum standard met by all recordings contributed.

With the minimum standards in place there were podcasts that did not meet the standards and therefore were not acceptable. They had to be re-recorded or face exclusion from the series. Needless to say in the end all contributors met, or well exceeded the required standard.

From a technical point of view, 2 gigabytes of recorded audio files were transferred to KAM digital servers from across the country via File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Only one coming in by mail on CD-ROM, much different than even just a few years ago. Some needed a further dialogue editing and all had music and voice over production added.

In all there are 32 English Podcasts and 7 French Language Podcasts in the series.

Intellectual Muscle: University Dialogues for the Vancouver 2010 Games is an eclectic and often provocative series of podcasts on topics related to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. From October 2009 to January 2010, 32 short lectures by prominent and up-and-coming Canadian intellectuals were recorded at universities across Canada and made available online as part of Intellectual Muscle.
In February and March 2010, Intellectual Muscle also hosted Sport and Society, a series of five thought-provoking dialogues featuring Olympic and Paralympic athletes who have used their celebrity to make a difference in the world.

Sport and Society was produced by the University of British Columbia and recorded live at the UBC Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. Intellectual Muscle was developed by Vancouver 2010 and the University of British Columbia, in collaboration with universities across Canada and The Globe and Mail.
